
Rory Cooper was recognized three times in the past year for his career-long dedication to advancing wheelchair technology and other efforts to improve the mobility of people with disabilities. Cooper, who uses a wheelchair himself, was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from the White House. Most recently, he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest honors in the profession. The founder of Human Engineering Research Laboratories at the University of Pittsburgh, Cooper holds 25 U.S. patents on products ranging from a robotic arm that can be attached to wheelchairs to help with transfers to a widely adopted ergonomic push rim that’s helped reduce rates of carpal tunnel syndrome among wheelchair users.
